Engrams is the stunning new LP from Letters From Mouse. Here's Steven Anderson's thoughts on the making of the album.

"I started with 2 ideas in mind, plinky plinky and full on drone, a few tracks in and these kind of merged and it's at this point I sat down and thought about how the music was making me feel. It definitely brought up memories, probably prompted by some of the field recordings used as these were recorded whilst on holiday at places like Chanonry Point where we watched dolphins and seals swim together, that was quite emotional. Anyway, that set the tone and track titles etc are based on memories."

Steven's production method has become much more plaintive and blissful, which is encapsulated perfectly on Engrams.

"Moving to modular is the best decision I have made, the possibilities are endless (unlike my bank account). Modular though is allowing me to make exactly the kind of sounds I want and as you have rightly identified that involves a far less direct sound. What I'm aiming for is something very contemplative, the kind of music that generates a thousand yard stare."

This entire album is staggeringly good, but my favourite is Slowly Coming Together, which does indeed seem to slowly distill all that is Jilk into one track. Amazing work, and wonderful to come across through the subscription library. swansither
