As Far Away As Possible is an exclusive track recorded by Ian for Werra Foxma Magazine and we are thrilled to be able to offer this to our SubClub subscribers as an exclusive CD. We asked Ian to tell us about this special and exclusive composition:

“This was improvised in my studio in three discreet sections and then stitched together and mastered in Ableton Live. It uses an unusual musical mode which is one of Olivier Messiaen’s Modes of Limited Transposition (Mode 2 to be precise). It doesn’t matter if this musical jargon means nothing to you, let’s just say it gives the chords and harmonies an unusual flavour."

"I featured this mode on the track Messiaen M31 from my latest solo album Coil (DiN74) and in some ways this is a more extended, ambient version of that piece."

"It used all analogue hardware synths which I have collected over the years. So the roll call for those is Roland System 100-M, VCS3, Serge modular, Eurorack modular, Buchla Easel Command, Moog Voyager and Moog Matriarch"

"All the effects are hardware too including vintage style delays and reverbs from my Echo Fix EF-X2 Tape Echo, Moog MF-104M Analog Delay pedal and Eurorack spring reverb. There’s a couple of digital Eurorack effects from the Strymon Starlab and Erica Synths Black Hole."

"I mixed all the various ingredients live through an analogue Mackie Onyx mixer before recording to Ableton. This gives the music a very retro, vintage analogue vibe and a lovely floating quality to it which hearkens back to my Berlin School / space music roots.”

REALLY wish I'd subscribed sooner to be able to enjoy this on vinyl! Curious the artist cited 12 Monkeys and not La Jetee as one of the key inspirations. For me, this has a more somber, introspective and timeless feel more akin to La Jetee than 12 Monkeys (though I also am a big fan of Terry Gilliam). Gorgeous music and you get the bonus of a list of excellent movies to enjoy (another note to the artist: Time Crimes is also a good film to watch). Now to somehow procure a vinyl copy...
